How do I get to Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine?
From JR Oda Station, take a bus to Omori (about 30 minutes). Private cars are restricted in the historic zone, so explore on foot or rent a bicycle at Omori. Electric-assist bicycles make the hilly terrain easier.
What can I see inside the mine?
The Ryugenji Mabu tunnel is open for self-guided tours (about 600 meters walkable). You'll see hand-carved tunnels where miners worked centuries ago. The temperature inside is cool year-round. Entry fee is around 410 yen.
How long should I spend at Iwami Ginzan?
Allow 3-4 hours minimum. From the Omori town center to the mine entrance is about 2km, plus time for the mine tour and exploring the preserved townscape with its historic merchant houses and cafes.
What makes Iwami Ginzan special?
At its peak in the 1600s, Iwami Ginzan produced a third of the world's silver. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its harmony between mining and nature - the forested landscape was preserved rather than destroyed.
