Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Furano from Sapporo?

Drive takes about 2.5 hours via Route 38. By train, take JR to Furano Station (about 2 hours with transfer at Takikawa). Direct buses run from New Chitose Airport in winter.

Is Furano a good alternative to Niseko?

Yes. Furano gets excellent powder with fewer crowds than Niseko. The terrain suits intermediates well. Prices are generally lower, and the town has a more local Japanese feel. Night skiing is available too.

What else can I do in Furano?

Famous lavender fields (the Tomita Farm in Nakafurano is the icon) bloom mid-June through early August. Year-round: cheese factory visits, wine tasting at the Furano Winery, ramen and curry at Kita-no-Kuni-Kara-no-Mori shop, several local onsen, and the Blue Pond near Biei is roughly an hour's drive away. The long-running drama 'Kita no Kuni kara' (1981–2002) was filmed here, and several film-set buildings can still be visited in Asahigaoka.

How much does a Furano lift ticket cost?

Adult one-day passes are roughly ¥7,500–8,500 in peak season, with cheaper afternoon, evening (night skiing) and multi-day rates. The resort is run by Prince Hotels, so packages that bundle lodging at the Furano Prince Hotel with lift tickets are usually noticeably cheaper than buying separately. Children, students and seniors get standard discounts.
