Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Gala Yuzawa from Tokyo?

Take a Joetsu Shinkansen marked for 'Gala Yuzawa' (or change at Echigo-Yuzawa for the short branch line), total time is about 75 minutes from Tokyo Station. The ski centre is built into the station, so you step off the train and ride a gondola straight up to the slopes. JR East regularly sells discounted Shinkansen + lift-pass + rental packages.

Can I rent ski equipment at Gala Yuzawa?

Yes, the station building has one of Japan's largest rental counters with skis, snowboards, boots, helmets and full outerwear from popular brands. Reserve online in advance: weekend morning queues can be long otherwise, and pre-booking guarantees your size. Storage lockers and changing rooms are right next to the rental floor.

Is Gala Yuzawa good for a day trip?

It's the easiest day-trip ski resort in Japan: leave Tokyo around 7–8am, be on the slopes by 10am, ski until 4–5pm and you're back in central Tokyo for dinner. Rentals, lockers, restaurants and an onsen bath are all inside the station building, so you can travel with just normal clothes and a small bag.

How much does a Gala Yuzawa lift ticket cost?

Adult one-day lift passes are roughly ¥5,500–6,500 in season, with afternoon-only and weekday discounts. JR East's combined 'Gala Yuzawa Day Trip' product bundles a return Shinkansen seat reservation and the lift pass at a meaningful discount versus paying separately, usually the best deal for a day trip from Tokyo.

When does Gala Yuzawa close for the season?

Gala Yuzawa is one of Japan's latest-closing major resorts: it opens in mid-December and runs into early May, with a 'spring ski' period in April–May when only the upper-mountain runs (typically South Course) stay open. Snow at the top is reliable through Golden Week most years.
