Why is Cortina famous for powder snow?
Located at the north end of Hakuba Valley, Cortina receives heavy snowfall from the Sea of Japan. Deep powder accumulates in the tree zones. Less crowded than Happo-one, so powder stays untracked longer.
How do I get to Hakuba Cortina from Tokyo?
Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station (90 min), then Alpico bus toward Hakuba (70-80 min). Cortina is in Otari village, north of central Hakuba. Some hotels offer shuttle from Hakuba center or Nagano Station.
Is Cortina good for beginners?
Cortina has some beginner terrain but is better known for intermediate and advanced skiing. The tree skiing requires skill. For beginners, nearby Hakuba Goryu or Iwatake offer more suitable slopes. Cortina excels for powder hunters.
What accommodation is available at Cortina?
Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba sits at the very base of the lifts and is ski-in/ski-out — its big atrium lobby is the main meeting point at Cortina. The hotel has onsen baths, several restaurants, and bundled lift+breakfast+dinner packages. Otari village down the road has a handful of smaller pensions and family-run ryokan for a quieter stay.
How much does a Cortina lift ticket cost?
Adult one-day Cortina-only passes are roughly ¥5,500–6,500 in peak season, with cheaper half-day rates. A combined ticket with neighbouring Hakuba Norikura is the popular choice and only marginally more expensive. For people travelling across Hakuba, the full Hakuba Valley pass (~¥9,500–10,500) covers Cortina as well as Happo-one and the eight other valley resorts.
