What is the Dragondola?
The Dragondola is Japan's longest gondola lift at 5,481 m, connecting Naeba to Kagura ski resort. The ride takes about 20 minutes and offers wide mountain views. A single Mt. Naeba pass covers lifts at both resorts. The gondola usually opens together with Naeba in mid-December and runs through the spring season, weather permitting.
How do I get to Naeba from Tokyo?
Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (about 75 minutes from Tokyo), then the Seibu-run bus from the West Exit to Naeba Prince Hotel (about 40 minutes). By car, plan around 2.5 hours via the Kanetsu Expressway, exiting at Tsukiyono IC and following Route 17 over the Mikuni Pass. Prince Hotel offers accommodation packages that bundle the bus ticket.
What is Fuji Rock Festival?
Japan's largest outdoor music festival, held at Naeba over three days in late July. It moved to Naeba in 1999 (after a famously stormy first edition at Mt. Fuji in 1997) and now draws around 100,000 attendees across a weekend, with multiple stages spread across the ski slopes and surrounding forest. The runs you ski in winter become campgrounds and festival grounds in summer.
How much does it cost to ski at Naeba?
Adult one-day Mt. Naeba passes (covering Naeba and Kagura together) run roughly ¥8,500–9,500 in peak season, with cheaper Naeba-only, half-day, and afternoon tickets. JR East and Tobu often sell discounted Shinkansen + lift-pass bundles that work out cheaper than buying separately. Children, students and seniors get standard discounts.
Where do most visitors stay at Naeba?
Naeba Prince Hotel, ski-in/ski-out right at the base, dominates the on-mountain lodging and is the easiest option for first-timers — buses, lift tickets, restaurants and Dragondola access are all on site. For a quieter or cheaper trip, base in Echigo-Yuzawa town instead and use the ski bus or train + bus each morning.
